Kitten Care: Top Tips for Healthy Kittens and Socialization


<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1)&nbsp;<strong>Myth: Neutral pH disinfectants are always safer</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;A disinfectant’s pH level (a measure of acidity or alkalinity) is not the most reliable indicator of how safe it is. Cranberry sauce and pickles, with acidic pH values of 1-2 do not pose safety concerns, which is why so many of us enjoy them! On the flip side, neutral pH disinfectants such as those made with Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (Quats) have been linked to occupational asthma and the development of dermatitis among users<sup>1</sup>.</p>



<p>Instead of relying on pH, standardized tests for skin and eye irritancy and other potential hazards provide much more accurate measures of safety. Rescue Disinfectants, with a pH ranging from 2-2.5, have proven to be non-irritating to eyes and skin, and are not classified for any health hazards in-use, highlighting the inadequacy of pH as a standalone metric for disinfectant safety<a>&nbsp;(</a><a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/msds-sds/">SDS here</a>)</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">2)&nbsp;<strong>Myth: Disinfectants with colours/dyes and added fragrances are better</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;Colors and fragrances in older disinfectants are often linked to safety concerns<sup>2</sup>, adverse health reactions, and a decrease in air quality<sup>3</sup>. In fact, animals are often much more sensitive to smells than we are, and many healthcare facilities now enforce fragrance-free environments due to health concerns.&nbsp; Also, added fragrances in cleaners and disinfectants often mask odor causing bacteria and soil, which makes it difficult for you to tell if you have truly killed and removed everything.</p>



<p>In contrast, Rescue Disinfectants are not only free of any added colors and fragrances, but they also have built-in deodorizing abilities. This is why Rescue is often a favorite of veterinary professionals and the only&nbsp;<a href="https://fearfreepets.com/disinfection/">Fear Free<em>®</em>&nbsp;disinfectant</a>, as it is free of artificial fragrances or harsh chemical odors that can cause stress and anxiety in a pet during a veterinary visit.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3)<strong>&nbsp;Myth: All disinfectants must be rinsed after the contact time to be safe for animals</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;Not all disinfectants need to be rinsed off surfaces after disinfection has occurred. The active ingredient in Rescue Disinfectants is hydrogen peroxide, which breaks down to water and oxygen once it dries on a surface. &nbsp;While some other disinfectant chemistries, such as quats, are known to leave<em><u>&nbsp;active residues&nbsp;</u></em>behind on surfaces which can lead to antimicrobial resistance overtime<sup>4</sup>&nbsp;and other concerns.&nbsp; The only ingredients left behind from Rescue™ is some slight harmless detergent residue (similar to dish soap).</p>



<p>As a best practice, we recommend allowing the disinfectant to air dry first before reintroducing animals to the area. This is to ensure pathogens of concern have been killed on the surface by achieving proper contact time. Alternatively, you can provide a rinse with water after the disinfectant has reached its contact time, which would ensure that there is no pooling of the disinfectant on the surface. If accidental contact of a wet surface and a patient was to occur,&nbsp;rest assured Rescue Disinfectants&nbsp;are&nbsp;non-skin irritating in-use (<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/msds-sds/">SDS here</a>).&nbsp; The only time a rinse with water is required is when disinfecting food-contact surfaces (e.g., water dishes, food bowls, etc.).</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4)&nbsp;<strong>Myth: Rescue Concentrate is not effective when diluted with hard water</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;Rescue Concentrate is designed to work well when diluted in hard water, to ensure that the solution is effective across a range of regions with varying water hardness. Rescue has chelating agents built into its formulation, which protects the solution from being inactivated from minerals in the water supply. Furthermore, Rescue has been demonstrated to remain effective in the equivalent of 400 PPM hard water (<a href="https://www.mcgill.ca/oss/article/health-you-asked/you-asked-hard-water-dangerous-drink">water greater than 120 ppm</a>&nbsp;is considered “hard”), providing confidence that most facilities can dilute and use Rescue Concentrate without concern.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5)&nbsp;<strong>Myth: Neutral pH products are always more compatible</strong></h2>



<p><strong><em>False!</em></strong>&nbsp;Similar to safety, the pH level of a disinfectant is not the only measure of its potential compatibility with surfaces and materials. Rescue Disinfectants have been tested extensively and found to be compatible with most commonly used materials (<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/ahp-compatibility-chart/">overview here</a>). Overall, Rescue Disinfectants work well with hard, non-porous surfaces like stainless steel, laminate, porcelain, ceramics, plastics, acrylics, resins, and silicon rubber.</p>



<p>It’s important to note, certain materials may face compatibility issues with any type of cleaner or disinfectant utilized. For instance, treating porous surfaces like unsealed concrete might not achieve full disinfection because of the porous nature, and issues with compatibility could arise over time. That’s why we suggest only treating hard non-porous surfaces, or adding a sealant for concrete, to ensure compatibility and complete disinfection.</p>

Five Ways to Reduce FAS in the ER


<p>Proper disinfection is key to maintaining a clean, safe environment for animals, reducing disease transmission while also minimizing anxiety triggers like strong chemical smells. Following the correct protocols ensure that the environment is clean while minimizing stressful sensory experiences that will help reduce fear and anxiety for the animals in your care.</p>



<p>However, common mistakes, like mixing chemicals or using expired products, can undermine your efforts. Learn how to avoid these pitfalls to ensure that you create a clean and safe space for the animals you care for!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">1) Not measuring accurately</h2>



<p>Always follow the instructions on the label when mixing and using a disinfectant. Make sure to measure accurately! People often use too little disinfectant, either because they measure it wrong or they want to save money by using less. But doing this can make the disinfectant too weak to be effective. To help mix it correctly, you could use a <a href="https://rescue-delta.vercel.app/products/dilution-equipment">pump </a>that makes it easy to get the right amount of product, or a <a href="https://rescue-delta.vercel.app/products/dilution-equipment">system </a>that mixes it for you automatically!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>2</strong>) Not reaching the proper contact time</h2>



<p>In other words, the surface being cleaned isn’t staying wet with the disinfectant solution for the required time to be effective. Make sure that staff members are informed about&nbsp;<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/contact-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">how long the product needs to remain</a>&nbsp;on the surface to work properly.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">3) Confusing sanitized with disinfection</h2>



<p>To claim something is sanitized, the product must have reduced the pathogen load by 99.9%. Disinfecting requires reducing the pathogen load by 99.9999%.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">4)&nbsp;<strong>Wiping the surface right&nbsp;</strong>away after spraying</h2>



<p>If you spray a surface and wipe it off right away, it won’t be effective. Remember, no disinfectant works instantly! Always check the product label to find out how long the disinfectant needs to stay on the surface and make sure staff are allowing that&nbsp;<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/contact-time/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">contact time&nbsp;</a>to be reached before wiping the surface down, or allowing the surface to air-dry.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">5) Using expired disinfectants</h2>



<p>Besides knowing how long a disinfectant lasts when it’s concentrated, it’s also crucial to know how long it lasts after you dilute it. This ensures it remains effective. The life of diluted disinfectants can vary—some last only 24 hours, others for 7 days, and some even for 90 days. Always make sure to read the label or contact the manufacturer to find out how long your diluted disinfectant can be used effectively.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">6) Topping off diluted disinfectant bottles, rather than starting each time with a cleaned bottle and fresh batch.</h2>



<p>Mixing old disinfectant with new can make the mixture too weak or ineffective. When the spray bottle gets low: empty the bottle, give it a rinse, allow it to dry, and then refill with new diluted disinfectant!</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">7) Mixing cleaning chemicals</h2>



<p>Mixing different chemicals can be dangerous and might stop your disinfectant from working right. For instance, if you add something scented to your disinfectant just because it smells nice, there’s a chance the chemical mixture won’t be as potent as it needs to be. This will lead to the potential of pathogens not being killed on surfaces which increases the risk of pathogen transmission for the staff and the animals.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">8) Not giving or receiving product specific training to team members</h2>



<p>Not all disinfectants are created equal. Different disinfectants work in different ways with various dilution rates, contact times, and safety precautions. Disinfectant manufacturers or sales reps can provide training materials or lead staff training sessions.&nbsp;<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/support/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Just ask.</a></p>

Avoid these Common Disinfection Mistakes


<p>When it comes to technology, most of us would agree that newer is better. After all, you wouldn’t want your state-of-the art facility to be full of technology from the 1920s, and it would be hard to imagine functioning without modern phones and computers and everything else we can no longer live without! However, a lot of people rely on outdated disinfectant technologies, such as bleach, which can pose threats to the safety of your patients and staff. Newer alternatives, such as Accelerated Hydrogen Peroxide® (AHP®), have emerged as a solution to some of the problems with these older disinfectant technologies. Let’s break down how AHP® works:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Hydrogen peroxide – </strong>The active ingredient in AHP® is hydrogen peroxide, which acts as a powerful disinfectant. However, the hydrogen peroxide levels in AHP® are at least 6 times lower than regular hydrogen peroxide that you can buy at the pharmacy. The result of this is a non-toxic, non-irritating, gentle disinfectant that can confidently kill pathogens, while putting the safety of your patients and staff front and center. In addition to the active ingredient, AHP® contains other commonly-used, safe ingredients, bringing us into our next category…</li>



<li><strong>Surfactants –</strong> Many older disinfectants require pre-cleaning prior to use, and are easily inactivated by organic matter. AHP® contains surfactants (detergents) that interact with soil particles to remove them from surfaces. <p>News outlets across the US are reporting an outbreak of a “mysterious” canine respiratory illness that have similarities to “kennel cough”, a term that covers various viral and bacterial infections that result in a honking cough in dogs. While dogs usually recover from kennel cough, some of the recent cases have unfortunately resulted in more severe outcomes such as pneumonia and even death. &nbsp;</p>



<p>While veterinary and other health officials have yet to identify the causative agent, what we do know is that infection control emerges as the critical weapon to manage this situation.</p>



<p>As we continue to monitor the situation and learn more, we recommend following established best practices for infection prevention in pet services settings. In the case of a suspected or confirmed outbreak, we recommend consulting a veterinarian for guidance on appropriate response measures.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Screening</h2>



<p>Screening of pets upon admission to your facility is important in preventing the entry of pathogens into your facility. This will allow you to track any health or vaccination changes, current or recent disease symptoms, or travel history that may indicate a higher risk of infection. Pets with known disease exposure may be excluded for two weeks, or as recommended by a veterinarian.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Isolation</h2>



<p>As a general precaution, unnecessary contact between pets or between pets and people should be avoided. Facilities should have a dedicated isolation area that can be used to separate animals with a suspected or confirmed infectious disease.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Cleaning/Disinfection</h2>



<p>When possible, equipment should be dedicated to a single animal. Surfaces and equipment that come into contact with multiple pets should be regularly cleaned and disinfected with Rescue.</p>



<p>In the case of a suspected outbreak, e.g., if a pet is exhibiting symptoms of a respiratory infection, it is recommended to disinfect using the 1:16 (8 oz./gallon) of Rescue Concentrate, or RTU/Wipes.</p>

How to Create a Fear Free Boarding and Daycare Environment

<p>Let’s take a look at some common sources of anxiety and things you can do to help our feline friends feel Fear Free.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Common Sources and Signs of Anxiety for Shelter Cats</h2>



<p>When cats sense the presence of uncontrollable threats, they can feel fear, anxiety, or stress.</p>



<p>Some signs of this occurring include changes in the cat’s vital signs, changes to the cat physically, an increase in withdrawal behaviors, defensive aggression, and a decrease in other behaviors.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Provide a Comfortable Environment for Shelter Cats</h2>



<p>Since shelter cats spend most of their time confined, it’s important to provide a comfortable environment.</p>



<p>Here are some things to consider.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>While inside the cage, every cat should have&nbsp;<strong>access to a litter box, food and water, a hiding</strong>&nbsp;<strong>spot, bedding, and toys.</strong>&nbsp;A hiding spot can be as simple as a cardboard box.</li>



<li>A large towel works great for&nbsp;<strong>bedding</strong>.</li>



<li>The litter box should be<strong>&nbsp;appropriately sized</strong>, with three inches of litter to allow for normal toileting behaviors.
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Scoop the box twice a day</strong>&nbsp;and clean it with hot water or mild dish soap, and rinse thoroughly weekly.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li>If possible, provide separate areas for eating and elimination through the use of a&nbsp;<strong>portal</strong>.</li>



<li>For those cats who enjoy attention from people, provide&nbsp;<strong>enrichment&nbsp;</strong>through routine 1-on-1 time, ideally outside of the kennel in a different area such as an office space or a room with a view.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Ways to Minimize Stress for Shelter Cats</h2>



<p>As important as it is to provide a comfortable environment, it’s just as important to minimize stressors.</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>This includes&nbsp;<strong>keep lighting consistent.</strong></li>



<li><strong>Avoid turning lights on and off</strong>&nbsp;each time someone enters and exits the room.</li>



<li><strong>Avoiding sudden and unexpected noises.</strong>&nbsp;This includes housing barking dogs as far from cats as possible.</li>



<li><strong>Avoiding odors</strong>&nbsp;from dogs, other cats, lotions and perfumes, cigarettes, and cleaning chemicals, including laundry detergent.
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Instead, to disinfect,&nbsp;<strong>use an odorless disinfectant</strong>&nbsp;such as Rescue.</li>
</ul>
</li>



<li>Thoroughly&nbsp;<strong>cleaning and disinfecting cages between occupants&nbsp;</strong>to ensure that no scent of the previous cat remains using an odorless, scentless disinfectant cleaner like accelerated hydrogen peroxide.</li>



<li>When cleaning using a spray bottle, be sure no animals are in close proximity, as the&nbsp;<strong>sound of spraying can elicit fear</strong>, anxiety, or stress in many animals.</li>



<li>Providing&nbsp;<strong>bedding&nbsp;</strong>that allows cats to get warm if they choose.</li>



<li>Cats prefer&nbsp;<strong>warm temperatures</strong>&nbsp;between 85-100 degrees Fahrenheit.</li>



<li>Using&nbsp;<strong>Fear Free handling</strong>&nbsp;and positive reinforcement techniques when handling cats. Setting this groundwork early will also prove to be helpful in other situations where the cat will need to be handled later.</li>
</ul>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>In these situations, have a<strong>&nbsp;familiar person</strong>&nbsp;handle the cat.</li>



<li>As you implement these changes,&nbsp;<strong>offer changes one at a time</strong>, and as a choice, by observing the cat’s reaction after the change.</li>

<p>Your work truly saves lives. <br>Even the best shelters can be stressful for pets, which has been shown to inhibit the immune system, making it harder for pets to recover in a shelter environment.  In order to keep illness from spreading in shelters, pets who have contagious conditions are isolated from other pets and most people, which can further impact their wellbeing. Additionally, many of these pets are at critical stages in their development, when they need to be learning how to live in a home and practicing forming attachments with their caregivers.</p>



<p>This is why you, the foster, are essential. Pets heal more quickly in the caring, low-stress environment of a home, where they’re able to get their emotional and developmental needs met.</p>



<p>Keeping people and pets safe and preventing the spread of illness may be easier than you think!</p>



<p>Follow the protocols below to disinfect efficiently and quickly.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Before Your Foster Pet Arrives</h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>It is recommended that the<strong>&nbsp;shelter’s vet is consulted&nbsp;</strong>before bringing a foster pet home, to understand and learn how to manage any infection risks that may be present. They may recommend that new foster pets are isolated in a particular area of the home for a two-week period to allow them to recover from infections without spreading pathogens to other areas. Be sure to&nbsp;<strong>check with the foster coordinator&nbsp;</strong>to see if there are any specific instructions to follow!</li>



<li>Ensure that the&nbsp;<strong>isolation area you create in your home is easy to clean and disinfect</strong>. Ideally, it will contain&nbsp;<strong>mostly hard, non-porous surfaces</strong>, such as tile or vinyl flooring or bathtubs and showers (spare bathrooms are often used). Kitten and puppy enclosures and play pens that can be zipped, or a crate in a spare room with the door closed are ideal to incorporate into your isolation area.</li>



<li><strong>Clean and disinfect the isolation area&nbsp;</strong>using Rescue<sup>TM</sup>&nbsp;RTU, following the protocol below, before introducing any new pets into the space.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">The Trip Home</h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Ensure that proper<strong>&nbsp;personal protective equipment (PPE)</strong>&nbsp;is worn when coming into contact with potentially infectious pets, including gloves and coveralls. When you get home,&nbsp;<strong>launder any clothing worn</strong>&nbsp;during the pickup, and&nbsp;<strong>clean and disinfect surfaces in the vehicle</strong>&nbsp;that may have become contaminated using Rescue RTU. Hand washing before and after handling animals or potentially contaminated equipment is equally important.</li>



<li>Don’t forget to&nbsp;<strong>disinfect your carrier</strong>! To save time, people often choose to hose down the carrier instead of disinfecting it which unfortunately results in many diseases being spread.</li>



<li><strong>Calming music&nbsp;</strong>like light classical, “spa” or ambient can help a lot with transport stress.</li>



<li>Some animals are sensitive to scents so avoid using essential oils. Instead, try a&nbsp;<strong>calming pheromone spray or diffuse</strong>r like Feliway.</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Settling In</h2>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li><strong>Assign dedicated equipment and supplies that will only be used for the new pet</strong>, and keep the door closed when possible, to minimize potential airborne spread of pathogens. Limit the movement of pets, people and supplies into and out of the isolation area as much as possible.</li>



<li><strong>Make a list of potential surfaces</strong>&nbsp;that could harbor pathogens and transmit infection. This will include all surfaces that the pet will touch, both inside the isolation area and when moving outside or to other areas of the home as needed. Clean and disinfect these surfaces at least once daily, or more often if visibly soiled, for as long as infectious disease is present or suspected.</li>



<li>Once all pets in the home are confirmed to be healthy, and are no longer in isolation, continue cleaning and disinfecting pet contact surfaces on a weekly basis, at minimum.&nbsp;<strong>Important surfaces to disinfect include</strong>:
<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>Pet beds</li>



<li>Blankets</li>



<li>Furniture</li>



<li>Floor</li>



<li>Pet crates and enclosures (including zippers)</li>



<li>Food contact surfaces</li>



<li>Toys</li>



<li>Doorknobs</li>
</ul>
</li>
</ul>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">How to Disinfect with Rescue RTU</h2>



<p>Rescue RTU is effective against even the toughest pathogens that foster pets may carry, including Canine parvovirus, Ringworm and Feline panleukopenia. Unlike bleach, Rescue kills pathogens while remaining gentle on pets and people – Rescue RTU is non-irritating to eyes, non-corrosive to skin and doesn’t have a harsh chemical odor. Rescue RTU can be used to clean and disinfect foster pet environments with the following protocol:</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">STEP 1: PRE-CLEAN HEAVILY SOILED AREAS</h3>



<p>Remove visible soils, including litter, food any other debris, and pre-clean the area by working from the least contaminated area to the most contaminated area.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">STEP 2: SQUIRT, FOAM OR WIPE RESCUE READY-TO-USE ONTO THE SURFACE</h3>



<p>Spray the product 6-8 inches away from the surface, making sure the area is visibly wet. Wettability and surface coverage are equally important to ensure disinfection can be achieved in one application.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">STEP 3: ALLOW SURFACE TO REMAIN VISIBLY WET FOR 1 MINUTE</h3>



<p>In order for disinfectants to be effective, they must remain wet on the surface for their entire contact time. Rescue RTU kills viruses, bacteria and fungi in one minute.</p>

<h3 class="wp-block-heading">STEP 4: WIPE SURFACE DRY OR ALLOW TO AIR DRY</h3>



<p>Use a damp, clean cloth to dry small areas, or allow to air dry. Food contact surfaces such as food bowls or water dishes should be rinsed with potable water following disinfection.</p>

<li><strong>Buy Biodegradable</strong></li>
</ol>



<p>Many professional cleaning and disinfection products can have negative effects on the planet when being used and disposed. Make sure you identify products which have more environmentally friendly ingredients, which are biodegradable and safe for simple disposal.</p>



<p>The best way to assess how eco-friendly your disinfectant is, is to check the active ingredient on the label! Commonly used quats (quaternary ammonium compounds) are known to accumulate in the environment and raise aquatic toxicity concerns. Additionally, chlorine compounds such as those found in bleach tend to be highly reactive leading to potential cross-reactions with other chemicals that may be present in wastewater.</p>
