<h4 class="wp-block-heading"><strong>The Full Protocol:</strong></h4>



<ol class="wp-block-list">
<li>Temporarily relocate the animal</li>



<li>Remove all items (bedding, bowls, etc)</li>



<li>Manually remove organic matter</li>



<li>Use low-flow water to remove remaining organic matter</li>



<li>Apply cleaning/disinfectant solution (ideally something with both cleaning and disinfectant properties).&nbsp; Mix and apply per label.</li>



<li>Allow disinfectant to sit for required contact time</li>



<li>After full contact time has passed, use a high-pressure hose to do a final rinse or wipe down to remove remaining disinfectant</li>



<li>Allow to dry thoroughly before replacing items (putting things back into wet environments has been shown to cause more disease)</li>



<li>Replace with clean bedding, toys, food/water bowls, litter boxes</li>



<li>Return animal to the same kennel/run/condo if possible, depending on shelter protocols</li>
</ol>



<p><strong>Notes on Spot Cleaning:</strong></p>



<p><em>While infection prevention is critical, it’s also important to keep an animal&#8217;s emotional well-being &nbsp;in&nbsp;mind during cleaning protocols. Complete cleaning and disinfection typically involves&nbsp;removing all items from the kennel and replacing them with clean, disinfected ones. This is the best way to reduce the risk of disease transmission.</em></p>



<p><em>That said, spot cleaning can be considered in between regular deep cleaning. Spot cleaning may involve leaving certain familiar items such as food bowls, towels, or bedding with the animal, provided they are not visibly soiled or contaminated. This keeps familiar scents in the environment which can help reduce stress. Build an effective C&D Program with these 5 Resources


<p>Hospital-associated infections (HAIs) in veterinary medicine can result in damaging health, financial and social consequences affecting patients, clients and staff. Over a 5-year period, 82% of veterinary teaching hospitals reported at least one outbreak while 45% experienced multiple outbreaks.<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/infection-prevention-leader-program/#_edn1">[i]</a>&nbsp;However, according to a paper on HAIs published in Veterinary Clinics of North America: Small Animal Practice, it is estimated that 10%-70% of HAIs can be prevented with the help of better infection prevention practices resulting in safer workplaces.<a href="https://rescuedisinfectants.com/infection-prevention-leader-program/#_edn2">[ii]</a>&nbsp;To advance infection prevention best practices, the National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (NAVTA) in partnership with Virox Technologies, have launched The Infection Prevention Leader Certificate Program.</p>



<p>An online program designed to provide animal care professionals with the knowledge needed to reduce the risk of spreading infection and create a safer workplace for their team, patients and clients, the Certificate Program consists of four complimentary RACE approved courses which include:</p>
